Keväinen kranssi

Vihdoin se on valmis. Aikasemmin postaamani kukat saivat paikkansa ovikranssista. Pohjalla on käytetty styroksista rengasta, joka on päällystetty harmaalla villalangalla.

I finally got this finished.  My spring wreath is ready and the flowers which I made earlier are on their places. I used ring of styrofoam as a base and covered it with grey wool.

Aika rientää

Tämä syksy on edennyt nopeasti ja kohta meillä on jo joulu melkein ovella. Aika siis alkaa valmistautua siihen. Olen joka joulu tehnyt uusia koristeita kotiimme. Tällä kertaa hain inspiraatiota Jason Thompsonin kirjasta Playing with books. Kirjasta löytyy myös suomenkielinen versio. Kirjassa on paljon ideoita vanhojen kirjojen hyötykäyttöön. Ensimmäiseksi kokeiluun pääsi yllä oleva pallo. Se valmistui itse asiassa aika nopeasti. Ohjeessa kehoitettiin käyttämään ympyräleikkuria, mutta en omista sellaista, joten piirsin ja leikkasin ympyrät pahvisen mallin avulla. Mikäli innostuit itsekin kokeilemaan ja haluat ohjeen, jätä kommentti.

I have had quite a busy autumn so far. I just realized that there are not so many weeks before Christmas. So probably I should start preparing for it. I have made new Christmas decorations every year and this year I got my inspiration from Jason Thompson's book Playing with books. There are plenty of ways how to use old books. My first experiment was this circle. It was actually didn't take that much time to make. Instruction advises you to use circle cutter, but I don't have one. So I used cardboard model to draw and cut my circles. In case you're interested trying and would like instruction, leave your comment.

Kinuskiherkku ja seinätarrat

Näin TV-kokki Chuck Hughesin ohjelmassa hyvältä näyttävän reseptin, jota oli pakko kokeilla. Kyseessä on kinuski-valkosuklaapaistos. Reseptissä se suositellaan nauttimaan lämpimänä, mutta itse tykkäsin enemmän siitä kylmänä. Heti valmistuttua massa on vielä sisältä valuvaa, mutta jähmettyy kylmetessään ja muuttuu hiukan tahmeaksi. Jos kaipaat jotain todella makeaa, tätä kannattaa kokeilla. Resepti löytyy foodnetwork.ca-sivustolta.

I shaw a tv-show from Chuck Hughes and he prepared a desert which I had to try. It's called Molten Caramel Cake. Recipe says that you should serve it when it's warm, but personally I preferred it when it became cold. Cake has molten heart when it's hot and when it cools down the middle sets and becomes a bit sticky. In case you need something very sweet, try this. Recipe can be found from  Food Network.

Syksyn flunssasta selvitessä askertelin makuuhuoneeseen ja olohuoneeseen seinätarrat. Valmiita tekstejä saa toki netistä tilaamalla, mutta halusin kokeilla tehdä ne itse tällä kertaa. Ostin mustaa kontaktimuovia, tulostin halutun tekstin, piirsin kirjaimet peilikuvana tulosteen toiselle puolelle ja liimasin kiinni kontaktimuoviin. Lopuksi leikkasin kirjaimet yksitellen. Aika työlästä, mutta halutunlaisen tuloksen sain aikaiseksi. Tarrojen hyvä puoli on se, että ne on helppo irrottaa, jos haluaa muuttaa sisustusta.

I decided to do my own wall stickers in stead of buying them from a shop. All you need to do is to buy black (or some other color) contact paper, print out the text, copy letters to the other side of the paper and clue them to the contact paper. After that it is easy to cut them one by one from the contact paper. It takes some time but the result satisfied me. So it was worth it.

Työpöytäprojekti etenee

Loman jälkeen töiden ohessa olen aloittanut työhuoneen pöydän kunnostamisen. Pohjatyöt on nyt tehty ja ensi viikolla pöydän pitäisi olla valmis maalauksen osalta. Pöydän hiominen osoittautui hyvinkin työlääksi projektiksi. Kiitos uuden hiomakoneen homma saatiin kuitenkin kasaan kohtuullisessa ajassa. Käsin hiottuna olisi projekti pidentynyt jo alkumetreillä hurjasti. Hionta on siis tehty ja tänään pöytä ja laatikot ovat saaneet pohjamaalin päälleen. Ensi viikolla ehkä jo kuva valmiista pöydästä. Viime kesänä hankitut vetimet pääsevät viimein käyttöön.

I have started repairing our worktable. Base work is finally ready and I can start painting  next week. Luckily I just bought a new sanding machine as it would have taken ages to do it by hand. Today I painted the table with base coat. Next week the table should be ready and maybe some pictures are published as well. Last summer I purchased handles for drawers and finally they will be putted in place as well.

Decoupagekokeiluja

Päätin kokeilla ensimmäisen kerran ikinä decoupage-tekniikkaa. Satuin näkemään tv:ssä askarteluohjelman, jossa tehtiin sanomalehdestä ja teipistä runko, joka sitten päällysteettiin decoupage-tekniikalla. Tutustuin aiheeseen enemmän netissä ja huomasin, että kaikki tarvittavat ainekset löytyvät omasta kaapista. Sanomalehden sivut pitää ensin rypistellä pehmeiksi. Sen jälkeen voidaan lehden paloista muotoilla teipin avulla halutun muotoinen esimerkiksi lintu. Leikkasin serveteistä pieniä neliöitä, jotka kiinnitin runkoon. Vedellä ohennetun erikeeperin avulla.

Linnun lisäksi kokeilin tehdä lasipurkkia muottina käyttäen purkin. Lintuun käytin normaalia teippiä, mutta purkin tuin maalarinteipillä. Lintu pääsee ilmojen lämmittyä koristamaan parveketta ja purkille vielä etsitään sopivaa sijoituskohdetta kotoa.

I tried decoupage technic for the first time a while ago as I noticed that I had all the ingredients home. I got inspiration for these from a TV program. I made bird's body using old newspaper which I first had folded in my hands to make paper softer and easier to shape. I used tape to shape my bird. Then I cut small squares out of paper serviettes, which I attached to bird using erikeeper (clue) thinned with water.

Besides the bird I also made a can using class can as a mold. I used regular office tape for the bird and masking tape for the can. Bird will go to our balcony when it gets a bit warmer. The can doesn’t have yet its own place, but I’m sure to find a good spot for it.

Itsetehdyt pakettikortit

Olen aina tykännyt paketoida joulupaketit käyttämällä yksiväristä paperia ja joko paperi- tai kangasnauhaa. Pakettikortit muodostuivat tänä vuonna lehdestä leikatuista mainoksista, jotka liimasin kartongille. Ihan kivoja niistä miestäni tuli ja valmistusprosessi oli nopea.

I have usually wrapped my Christmas presents in one colored paper and used either paper or fabric ribbons to tie them up. This year I made self all the gift tags using pictures from old newspapers and brochures. I clued pictures on a cardboard. I think they look nice and they were easy to make.

Ikkunan koristajat

Olohuoneen ikkuna näytti alastomalta ja päätin tehdä siihenkin koristeen samaan tyyliin kuin keittiön ikkunaan. Piparimuottien sijaan pääosaan pääsivät kaapista löytyneet lasikristallit.

I had to get some decorations to our living room's window and I decided to use same idea as I had in kitchen window. Instead of cookie molds I used glass crystals. I like the way light goes through them.

Kookoskeksit ja piparkakkumuottien uusi elämä

Viikonlopuksi piti keksiä muutamia gluteenittomia herkkuja, joita innokkaasti selailin netistä. Päädyin tekemään yksinkertaisen reseptin mukaan kookoskeksejä, jotka muistuttivat minua kovasti yläasteella valmistetuista kaurakekseistä. Kotona huomasin, että kokooshiutaleita olikin vähemmän kuin tarpeeksi, mutta päätin kuitenkin yrittää. 

Ahvenanmaalta hankkimani vanhat piparimuotit näkevät tästä edespäin päivän valon koristamalla keittiön ikkunaa. Kokosin koivun risuista kehikon, johon kiinnitin muotit narulla kiinni. Joulun lähestyessä narut voi vaihtaa vaikka punaiseen nauhaan, jos haluaa lisää väriä.

Kookoskeksit (n 20 kpl)

175 g kookoshiutale

2 kananmunaa

150 g sokeri

Vatkaa ensin kananmunat sekaisin ja lisää sokeri koko ajan vatkaten. Vatkaa vaahdoksi. Lisää kookoshiutaleet ja anna odottaa hetki. Asettele pellille kahvilusikoiden avulla ja jätä keksien väliin isot välit, jotta ne eivät tartu toisiinsa paiston yhteydessä. Paista 200 asteisessa uunissa 10-12 minuuttia tai kunnes ovat saaneet sopivasti väriä. Anna jäähtyä ennen siirtämistä pelliltä.

For the weekend I  had to come up with some gluten-free treats, which I browsed through the internet. I decided to make coconut cookies. At home, I noticed that I didn't have enough grated coconut, but I still desided was less than enough, but I decided to have a go at it.

Old cookie molds, which I brought from Åland, will see day light as I made a decoration for kitchen window out of them. I gathered a frame from birch twigs and attached molds to it with pieces of string. To get some Christmas spirit you can change strings into red silk string.

Coconut cookies (20 pieces)

175 g grated coconut

2 eggs

150 g sugar

Whisk a bit of the eggs at first and then add sugar whisking all the time. Whisk until mixture becomes foam. Add the coconut and let it wait a while. Using two teaspoons set pieces of dough onto baking sheet covered with baking paper. You need to leave quite much space between each cookie to prevent them to stick each others. Bake in 200 degree oven for 10-12 minutes or until cookies look ready. Let cool before taking them out of the baking sheet.

Varaslähtö jouluun

Tiedän, että jouluun on vielä aikaa, mutta yhtenä päivänä sain idean joulukorteista ja pakkohan niitä oli sitten alkaa tekemään jo tässä vaiheessa. Aikaisemmin tein aina useita erilaisia kortteja, mutta viime vuosina olen siirtynyt sarjatuotantoon ja näin ollen saan kortit tehokkaammin tehtyä. Joulukorttien tekeminen on minulle yksi tapa rentoutua kaiken kiireen keskellä ja tekemällä joulukortit jo nyt säästän aika joulukuussa. Tämän vuoden korttien idea on kypsynyt mielessäni jo jonkun aikaa ja vihdoin kiteytyi pari viikkoa sitten. Toivottavasti kortit ilahduttavat saajiaan.

One day I got an idea for my Christmas cards and I had to start creating then nevertheless it's still two months to Christmas. Before I made several different cards but now I have started using only one model which I change a bit by changing materials. Making Christmas cards is one way for me to relax. I hope everybody will be happy to receive my card.
